This is really cool. Hope we can see it before the New Year! I just realized you live in Toronto, Canada, as well (actually, I'm in Waterloo right now) Esn. Have you been to Nuit Blanc (held by Scotiabank) before?
Back to your project: How long does it take you to paint one frame in ArtRage? This style looks very tough to animate also.

I have not, no. Have you ever been to the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema? They're showing some really kickass films this year, and I plan on attending. About 1-5 hours, depending on the background. As for "frames", I'm not making a new painting for each frame but using digital cutout animation (I'm going for something like this, only with a more naturalistic style and more subtle colours). Here's my original topic on the ArtRage forums where I go over technique: www2.ambientdesign.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9381

OMG. I really want to go! I think I may be able to go since I finish my second last midterm exam the day before. I love Grave of the Fireflies, and I've been wanting to watch The Piano Forest for a while...
Thanks for the YouTube link! I would have never known such awesome videos existed since the language is absolutely foreign. If only I understood the lyrics... =O
If you have lyrical songs in your project, I hope you have them translated in English. xD

I'm most looking forward to seeing "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" on the big screen finally. That's a Ukrainian lullaby from the Russian "Lullabies of the World" project. My rough translation of the lyrics: O, o, o The night has come and small children it puts to bed. Under the window shivers a small cherry tree and asks to be let in because winter has come.
O, o, o close your eyes and in happy dreams warm your soul. Go to the boy lovely cherry tree, in the crib it will be warm.
O, o, o night has come to us for little children it is bedtime Grow up, little one with that cherry tree and let not fate forget to smile upon you also. There's also a Swedish lullaby from that project (Ola should understand the words of that one): www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwEtAwXgeaQ www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKZ_1TRFqt4Personally, I also really like the Turkish one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h31cg2KRrgI have no lyrics in my own film, just some nice music by MJTTOMB.

Really cool movies!
Can you please repost the Swdish ling, this one is identical with the russian you posted(:
Really nice colours in those movies, and the music is really calm. Are they all lullabies?

Are they all lullabies? Oops, sorry. Here's the Swedish one (and that other one isn't Russian, but Ukrainian; I could understand it because the languages are similar, and also because someone posted a partial Russian translation in the Youtube comments): www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKZ_1TRFqt4Yes, it is a Russian project to create cartoons based on the lullabies of all the world's nations. They are all directed by Elizabeth Skvortsova. Here's the project homepage: www.lull.ru/eng/index.htmlI also really like this Yiddish lullaby: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUouSTka1y0

Hmm, I'm getting some weird white artefacts all of a sudden. Ola, have you by any chance seen anything like this? I made two animated GIFS to show what's going on in two separate places: (the flash "stage" is set to 400% in order to show them better; in reality they are 4x smaller, but are very noticeable) These shapes appeared after I added a layer that I guess takes up a lot of system resources. I'm thinking, would it work if I just drew some black shapes on top, to cover them up...? EDIT: Ok, I tried that... it seems to cover them up in the Flash preview, but some are still left when I actually make a swf file. Hmm...

Well, I haven't really fixed that bug yet, but I've been making good progress on the rest of the film. The only scene that's missing is one that lasts a few seconds. The main thing to do after that is to work on the falling snow, which is a very important element. My version of Flash is antiquated (it's from 2002), but I did find a pretty good actionscript snow effect that will work. I just hope it doesn't slow things down too much.

Hmmm, looks really strange, I dont think I have seen anything like it before. It is hard to analyze this without the Fla. The first thing that comes to my mind is that the files are to heavy for flash to play, or if they have been scaled or distorted in flash.
I can have a look if you send me the fla.
Hope the snowfall works out, I can send you a animated version if you would like. No scripts.
Looking forward to see more!

By the way, is it true that the story is incomprehensible, as I was recently told by another person I showed it to? I'm afraid that I may have been too subtle... I'm going to put a frame around the film and have it change colour between the "dream" and the "real life" sections... maybe that will make things a bit clearer...

Working on the snow now. Looks great, and no problems so far (at least not after I asked a question on their forums and got a good answer). EDIT: Nope... hit a snag. I hope things work out... EDIT2: I've been making a lot of progress understanding it, with the help of the people on that forum... I think this will work after all... though I feel like I'm charting new territory. EDIT3: Argh, I have an error with what I think should be simple AS code, but I'm getting no answers from anyone. I've got to finish this in the next few days...

Hi Esn,
I have not had time to check your file, too busy with family right now. But I can send you the snow file tomorrow.
Good luck!

Sure, Ola, that's quite understandable. Please do send it over when you have the time.
P.S. This actionscript business is confusing the hell out of me... it keeps doing the opposite of what it's supposed to, only not all the time...
EDIT: I finally got it to work!!! ;D But Ola, please send along the snow too, if you have the opportunity. I might still have a good use for it (of course, I'll give credit in the credits if I do use it).
