Well, after criticizing Ola's character drawings so much I finally got intrigued and tried to see if I could draw something in his style (I'll call it the "round head and no chin" style ). I found that it wasn't that easy... for one thing since all of the proportions and distances between facial features are different from what I normally use, I somehow had to learn this new "language". For another thing it's a bit further from realistic human facial shapes than the style I normally use, so it was harder to make it seem like a plausible human being. Also, I didn't use round eyes like Ola does... simply because I don't like using round eyes. (please click on the image for a bigger picture) This was the first one I drew... note how the body shape harken's to Ola's Nim? #2... this is probably my favourite one #3... this one has a touch of Adam Phillips in it as well, I think (the way that the eye looks at you) #4... if I do use round eyes, I prefer to have them be the 3D spherical type. #5... I sort of based this slightly on Ola's drawing of the unnamed girl in Nim's Journey. Turned out loking a bit older than I expected, but ah well. So, what do you think? P.S. Since the rules for this forum aren't quite finalized... I haven't started an "Esn's Artwork" thread. There's a gallery over here, so nothing'll get lost; I'll just keep updating to it.

Cool, they kinda resemble sketches you would see in The New Yorker and such... #3 is my fav.

Hi there Esn, great work on those illustrations! Well, I have been doing big nosed characters aswell. One of them is this guy. He will probably figure within Nim's Journey.

Ola, do you use charcoal for drawing? That's a great picture, I like the wind illusion especially, and the clothes that he wears. I think the hand looks too long for the arm length, though... EDIT: no, I see... the arm looks shorter than it really is because there is a blacker line that stops halfway along it, making it look quite short.

Ola, I was admiring your shading today while looking at your tutorial for drawing the river background. I was wondering how you got the shadows, on the trees especially because thats what Im drawing, to look so fluid, blended and real. I often end up with jagged edged shadows that do not blend. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks. Jo

Hi there, I think I know what you mean. When creating the shadows I use a big brush with very smooth edges. You can choose what kind of brush you would like to have. I usually use a colour with alpha applied to it, maybe 30% visibility. This gives me the opportunity to control the build-up of the shading. When it comes to the edges of the trees, for example, there are a few ways to get rid of the sharp edges. Sometimes I use a smooth brush and just erase the edge by hand, sometimes I select the area, applying a feather to the selection and then apply the filter Gaussian blur.
Hope you understand some of my explanation. Good luck!

yes, thats great, thank you very much! the applied alpha was exactly what I needed. I cant wait for more updates on nimsjourney and especially the day when it is fully released.
Good luck on your continuing masterpiece.
