I'm not quite sure where to ask this. I might as well do it here. Perhaps you've answered this question already, but I shall ask anyway. What tools do you use to paint your beautiful backgrounds? I'm thinking in particular of the type of tablet that you use (if you use one). Do you have any recommendations about how to learn to paint on the computer, and what kind of software/hardware I should think of getting?

I am mainly using photoshop to paint my backgrounds and I use a wacom tablet (A5). There are quite a few places on the web where you can find tutorials on how to create matte paintings. Just type in "matte painting tutorials" in google. Start here www.mattepainting.org/Cheers!

Thank you. One more thing: Is it possible to have an object in Flash which is painted in a program like photoshop, but which is half-transparent around the edges (or some of the edges)? The digital equivalent of this (look at the construction of the face, halfway down the page).

Yes, just export it as png with a transparent background. Then you can import it into flash. What version of flash do you have?

2004...
And I guess I shouldn't zoom in or out when using pngs, because it seems like Flash makes it really blocky, right?

Well, if you create the image regarding to the zoomed in position, it will not be blocky. You should never zoom in more than 100%.
