Laughter and Grief by the White Sea. An animated feature film about the Pomors who live by Russia's White Sea in the north. Made in 1987 or 88, and has only been released on VHS within Russia. It's not very well-known, although some of the segments that make up the film are quite popular on their own. I really adore this film. It is wonderfully funny, and at the same time the ending is one of the most moving I've ever seen. The translation into English is almost finished, but not quite. I hope Roamer will be able to help a bit when he comes by. Also, here's a guide I wrote on how to find and download Russian animation. Many Russian films are in the public domain, and many others are impossible to find anywhere. If you wish to find this film in slightly better quality, it can be found on mults.spb.ru over here (read my guide first, though). The subtitles (slightly incomplete - there are a few missing words, maybe 5 or so) are attached to this message.

The Tree and the Cat (1983) This one was a recent discovery for me; it's from an excellent DVD that I brought back from Russia and just got around to watching. This film brought tears to my eyes... Not quite of sadness, but it captures something so fundamental, something which I never thought I'd see. The Cow (1989, Aleksandr Petrov, nominated for Oscar) And this one is quite famous... I believe I already talked about Aleksandr Petrov somewhere here.

Just posting the English subtitles that I created for " The Key" (1961), a feature film by Lev Atamanov, who also directed " The Snow Queen"... I'll post the link to the film soon.
